Providing Knowledge, Stategy and Support for the development of skills in the resources industry

Work Readiness

What is the Work Readiness Program?

Designed to fast track careers in the mining sector the Work Readiness Program targets school leavers, university graduates and other non-experienced personnel who are keen to enter the industry.

This project has been undertaken as a project funded under the National Skills Shortages Strategy on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Recently piloted, the Work Readiness Program is in direct response to feedback from the resources sector requesting an entry-level training program that:

  • Provides consistent and proven outcomes
  • Has the capacity to greatly enhance the productivity of workers who are new to the sector; and
  • Will potentially attract new workers into the sector

The Work Readiness Program has been designed as a suite of competencies that will contribute to the final assessment in the relevant Certificate Two qualification.

Importantly, the Work Readiness Program is interactive and is delivered via classroom, on-site and simulator training, encouraging team work and ‘industry ready’ skills.

Initially, the Program has focussed on coal with a five week course currently being piloted. A metalliferous program is being developed and will be launched by the end of the year. Each program is tailored to the specific requirements of individual mine site.

Next Steps:
The first Program was completed in March/April 2008.
