Mining Industry Skills Centre announces 2008 Training Award Winners

29th September 2008

The Mining Industry Skills Centre is pleased to announce the winners from the 2008 Training Awards Dinner held recently in Brisbane.

The finalists for each category were selected from an overwhelming number of nominations taken Australia-wide. Winners include BHP Billiton, BMA Coal, Fenner Dunlop and Queensland Alumina Limited.

More than 350 people attended the tenth annual Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards to recognise outstanding commitment and leadership in workforce planning and development in the Australian resources industry.

Following the success of the 2007 Training Awards, this year saw a record number of high-quality nominations and finalists were received from around Australia including Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

The Skills Centre’s Training Awards are the resources industry’s most prestigious training and skilling awards and showcase the leading work being undertaken by companies, trainers, individuals and trainees.

Mining Industry Skills Centre’s Project Officer - Skills Strategy, Kellie Lister, said that the Training Awards are highly sought-after and selecting a winner proved to be a challenging task for the judges.

“The standard of applicants for this year’s Training Awards was extremely high. The level of commitment to learning and development expressed by all of the applicants was inspiring and it is clear that learning and development initiatives in the resources industry are becoming a keystone for safety, productivity, recruitment and retention.

“The standard of applicants for this year’s awards was extremely high; in some categories the decision to nominate a clear winner proved extremely difficult,” continued Ms Lister.

“The level of commitment to learning and development expressed by all applicants, both individuals and organisations, was inspiring; it is clear that across the industries learning and development initiatives are becoming a keystone for safety, productivity, recruitment and retention.”

The 2008 Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards Dinner was held following the conclusion of the Skills Centre’s annual Conference, which this year was themed “Future Focused. Developing tomorrow’s workforce today.”

The Mining Industry Skills Centre congratulates all of the 2008 finalists and award winners and acknowledges the work being undertaken by these individuals and organisations in ensuring the quality of learning and development initiatives in the Australian resources industry.
