Mining Industry Skills Centre Chief Executive Officer

Derek Hunter was appointed CEO in March 2006 and restructured the former Queensland Mining Industry, Training and Advisory Board (QMITAB) into the current day Mining Industry Skills Centre. 

Derek’s background in education, leadership development and organisational change have been key in shifting the culture of the organisation to a more proactive focus on workforce development and planning for the industry.

Achievements:
Significant achievements during Derek’s leadership include:

• The transitioning of the original Queensland Mining QMITAB to the Mining Industry Skills Centre to more effectively ensure service to the industry
  
• The development of the Heartbeat Program, the first skills shortage program to identify skills shortages by skill sets
  
• The development of a Skills Strategy based on industry research in Queensland but applicable to the mining industry Australia-wide
  
• The development of a simulation business unit that is providing heavy equipment simulation leasing and training materials to mine sites
  
• The development of a simulation research development facility to be opened in Mackay to facilitate fundamental change in the industry’s appreciation of simulation
  
• Expansion of the work of the Mining Industry Skills Centre to encompass the needs of an industry that has no state or territory boundaries; and
  
• The establishment of a relationship with MITAC in the Northern Territory allowing us to service the needs of the industry in the Territory
   

Future priorities:
With an increased focus on the commercial operations of the business and the development of licensed products and research currently used successfully throughout Queensland, Derek will be focussing on ensuring the Skills Centre assists the resources sector nationally and internationally.
