The Mining Industry Skills Centre is responsible for creating skilling solutions for the Resources Industry and acting as an advisory body to this sector and to the government. We do not train, employ or place people in jobs, however some of the information below may be a useful starting point for anyone considering a career in the Resources Industry.
As part of the implementation of the Mining Industry Skills Strategy, the Mining Industry Skills Centre is working with industry and related stakeholders to ensure that career information is readily available. This project is due for completion in December 2009.
In the meantime if you are interested in a career in the resources industry, it is important to be aware that the shortages of people talked about in the popular media relate to skills shortages of tertiary qualified or certified trades relevant to the industry.
The following positions are the most obvious shortages, and are in the highest demand;
Accountant
Engineers
Diesel Fitter
Exploration Geologist
Fitters
Geologists
Geophysicist
Geotechnical Engineer
Electricians
Environmental Scientist
Haul Truck Operator
Mine Deputy
Mine Surveyor
Mining Engineer
Refrigeration Mechanic
Surveyors
Tertiary qualified safety personnel with heavy industry experience

If you have one of these skills, then using the careers section of mining company websites should enable you to register your interest and the companies will then contact you if they have vacancies.
If you don’t have one of these skills in demand, but are interested in working in the resource industry, an apprenticeship, traineeship or completing a university degree is an alternative option for career entry.
We would recommend that you contact employers who contract to the mining industry and ask their advice on what you can do to become an attractive candidate to them. You can find contact details for these contracting groups through a web search for ‘mining contractor’.
